On April 21, 2021 CarMD released it's 2021 Vehicle Health Index.
CarMD is a leading provider of automotive diagnostic data who collects and analyzes data to determine the most common repair needs in the country. In fact, CarMD has collected data on more than 500 million vehicles, including more than 120 million fixes since 1996. With this data they , have built a database of failures and repairs related to a vehicle’s on-board diagnostic system. This years report shares what was the cause and cost of the most common check engine light-related repairs.
The following is a breakdown of the top 5 check engine light - related repairs:
1) Replace catalytic converter(s) with new OE catalytic converter(s), $1,383
2) Replace oxygen sensor(s), $243
3) Replace ignition coil(s) and spark plug(s), $389
4) Replace mass air flow sensor, $336
5) Tighten or replace fuel cap, $25
The report also detailed that the average car repair cost was $378.77, which was down 1.6 percent in 2020. Labor costs were down 2.8 percent and parts costs were down one percent.
In Addition, CarMD reported that it found that 2007 vehicles were the most likely to need check engine light repairs, with nearly 10 percent of all repairs coming from the 2007 model year. To view the report in its entirety please click here.
