Hyundai has announced that they will be replacing battery systems in over 80,000 electric vehicles due to fire risks. This move will cost the automaker an estimated 900 million dollars and is the start of a growing issue between automakers and battery makers in the world of electric vehicles regarding who should foot the bill when trouble arises. The recent recall focuses mostly on the Kona EV which is Hyundai's biggest-selling electric car with 76,000 models built between 2018 and 2020. There have been 15 reported cases of fires involving the Kona EV - 11 of which occurred in South Korea, 2 in Canada, 1 in Austria, and 1 in Finland. This includes the weight of both passengers and cargo. Most people view payload only in terms of how much cargo a vehicle can carry and do not consider the occupants' weight in the vehicle.
