It’s hard to believe it’s November already. Are you and your car both ready for the cold weather? It’s not just a matter of staying warm inside your car as you drive through the snow or navigate icy roads. You need to make sure that your car can handle the chilly and sometimes slippery or visibility-limited conditions. There are a few things you can do every Autumn to keep you and your family safe on the roads in Winter. Keep an emergency winter supply box in your car. Last month’s post enumerated everything that should be included in a well-stocked emergency car kit, so please refer to that post for the full list. Important winter-specific items should include an ice scraper and a small shovel; a carpet remnant, kitty litter, or sand for traction; blankets, gloves, and changes of warm clothes for you and your passengers; and some high-energy snacks like nuts, chocolate, and beef jerky. Our 10 Favorite Ways to Entertain Kids on Long Car Rides

Did your family take road trips when you were a kid? Do you remember how you tried to deal with the boredom of a long, hot car ride with your brother always putting his foot on your side and your sister yelling “Mom, he keeps looking at me!” Did your mom or dad glare at you in the rearview mirror and growl “Be quiet or I’m turning this car around and taking us home!” Ah, the good old days, right? The Cars That Are Most Popular with Women--and Why

The Cars That Are Most Popular with Women--and Why

OK. Is there such a thing as most popular with women? In what some people (not us!) might term “the good old days,” cars were something that only men were supposed to know or care about. Automobile manufacturers advertised to men in commercials written by men. The assumption was that men bought the cars, men drove the cars, men by their very nature understood cars. (Women? Not so much.)   The process of shopping for and buying a car was so manly it practically screamed (well, bellowed in a very deep voice) “ladies, stay away! And while you’re at it, bake me a pie!”   If a woman even dared to venture alone into the testosterone-fueled atmosphere of a dealership showroom, she most certainly would be patronized by the plaid-suit-wearing, cigar-chewing salesman (always a man) and told “Here’s the perfect car for you, little lady--look, it even has a light-up vanity mirror so you can check your lipstick while your husband is driving you ar ... read more

Kia Bursts into Flames

http://www.wesh.com/article/caught-on-camera-woman-escapes-after-kia-catches-fire-on-i-4/20919470 This vehicle, engulfed in flames in the video, was part of a manufacturers recall for engine compartment fires. The manufacturer claimed they had no current address for the owner. Some  service provider, somewhere, was servicing that vehicle and had a valid address. At CARS of America, we check for open recalls on your vehicle every time you visit, print it, give it to you, and make sure you understand it is a safety recall that must be performed by an authorized dealer.  One more example of the many value-added services that vehicle owners may not realize we provide, even with a simple oil change. The owner of this Kia could have avoided one big hassle if she was a CARS of America client

Hybrid Myth Busting

Hybrid Myth Busting

Myths have been a part of automotive service forever. Time to bust another one; All the talk about "corroding buss bars" in Hybrid Battery Packs misses the more major point; the internal corrosion. As the battery creates electricity, electron flow is created. Plate particles float in the electron flow from the negative pole to the positive pole. Because of the magnetic property of electricity, these particles "stick" to the positive, creating resistance, in the same way as "corrosion" does on the buss bars. Eventually this internal corrosion will cause the Hybrid light to come on. Most shops and all dealers just replace the battery. There is a better choice. Do you know what it is? $50 CARS of America gift card to the first person that sends the correct answer to [email protected]. Winner will be determined by time stamp. P.S. It's ok if you don ... read more

An Auto Repair Shop that LOVES to Recycle? Tell Me More...

Here at CARS of America being “green” is something we practice daily in both our Glenview and Evanston locations. Our goal is to not only help the Earth, but to improve everyone’s health while helping you save money! There are a variety of things we do to be Earth-friendly, here are a few: We use waste oil heaters. These EPA-approved units allow us to burn engine oil and transmission, differential, transfer case and brake fluid to heat our facilities. By burning the oil the chances of oil leaking or spilling while being transported to a recycling facility are reduced. It also helps us decrease our carbon footprint and dependence on virgin fossil fuel. We recycle fluids such as brake fluid and coolant, metal such as exhaust pipes and wheel bearings, and all the tires we collect when we install new ones. By recycli ... read more

Despite temperatures still hanging out in the 30s, it is time to get a jumpstart on spring cleaning. Our homes aren’t the only thing in need of some spring cleaning - our vehicles are too! Cars experience a lot of wear and tear during the harsh winter months so it’s only fair that we give them a little TLC when the weather clears up.  Here are 5 tips to help get your car ready for the spring:1) Clean Out the Trunk Now some people may not use their trunk as a place to store things, and others do. If you are one of the latter, then this tip is for you. Get a big empty box and a garbage bag and go to your trunk. Begin to sort through the things that you want to keep and put them into the box.
