Honk! honk! What note do you hear?

Honk! honk! What note do you hear?

Next time someone honks at you as you’re enjoying a ride around Evanston or Glenview, listen closely. Do you hear the musical note F? Car horns emit a specific pitch—most likely an F—that can be written down as a musical note. Listen to these vintage horn sounds! But if that other driver is steering an older-model vehicle, he might be trying to get your attention with a C-sharp note. That’s because car horns have evolved through the years. During the early 1960s and 1970s, car horns emitted a C-sharp, but carmakers raised this to a higher pitch to ensure motorists could hear horns through closed windows. “Ah-ooo-gah” probably is the most famous car horn of all time. Model T drivers made that noise when squeezing their vintage bulb horns. Want to hear 18 vintage vehicle horns ... read more

Headlight restoration enhances nighttime driving

Headlight restoration enhances nighttime driving

Dull, cloudy, hazy or dim? Would you use these words to describe your headlights when driving at night? Then, it might be time to consider bringing your car in for headlight restoration. Dingy or dull lenses happen when the UV coating on headlamps absorb sunlight. The lenses get damaged over time and slowly deteriorate, especially on cars parked outside or in sunny climates. CARS of America can help improve your nighttime driving visibility experience with headlight restoration. What does this restorative process involve? A sanding disc and special abrasive are used to remove the clouding, discoloration and surface defects from the lens. After buffing and polishing multiple times, the lens is restored, dramatically improving the brightness of your headlights. This easy and quick process often can be performed in one hour or less. Plus, it ... read more

Are drugstore reading glasses like quick oil change stations?

Yes, here’s why This is what I was thinking about when I was sitting in the doctor’s waiting room for my annual eye exam.  I started thinking about how reading glasses from the drugstore, aka “cheaters”, are similar to quick oil change stations.  Here’s why I think they are similar. Cheaters are convenient.  It’s easier to pick up a pair while you’re shopping rather than set an appointment for an eye exam.  But, you can’t replace a good eye exam with a pair of cheaters. Annual eye examinations check your vision and the health of your eyes. Did you know that diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, hypertension and rheumatoid arthritis can be caught early by an eye exam? Similarly, it requires an experienced, ASE-certified technician to identify any repairs needed or perform necessary preventive maintenance other than an oil change. Did you know that CARS of America does a thorough inspection on every vehicle that ... read more

What’s in your blind zone? AAA tests show rear-view cameras DO help!

What’s in your blind zone? AAA tests show rear-view cameras DO help!

Beginning in 2016, carmakers are required to add rear-view image systems into all passenger vehicles. Although this new regulation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was met with criticism, AAA conducted tests that showed rear-view camera systems improved visibility from 36 percent to 75 percent. AAA evaluated 17 vehicles of varying types and sizes with factory-installed and aftermarket cameras. According to their results, rear-view cameras improved visibility in small sedans by 36 percent and in hatchbacks by a whopping 75 percent. The improvement for large trucks and SUVs fell in the middle of that range. “Rear-view cameras are a great supplement for drivers,” says John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering. “Cameras ... read more

It's not easy being the customer, is it?

On Christmas day, my wife and I had to rush CiCi, one of our dogs, to an emergency veterinary hospital because she suddenly became ill.  Thankfully, she has recovered and is back to her favorite activities of counter-surfing and playing ball. However, going through this experience made me remember how difficult it can be to have something unexpected happen and then wait for a diagnosis and an estimate of costs. Here are three important things I was reminded of during our dog’s illness.  Although it was not a pleasant five days, I know it will help our team provide a better service experience to you. The experts need to remember to use  language that is easily understandable to people who do not share their expertise. An unplanned repair is stressful.  Estimates are helpful, but empathy is just as important. Listening is the best communication tool we have. Our team works hard to provide excellent service, but a reminder ... read more
